The Dowling Street Project
The Dowling St Project was a loose collective of the artists who had studios at 20a Dowling Street. This is the upstairs area of the heritage building in Dowling St, Dunedin, that houses the Milford Gallery on the ground floor. My studio was in this building between 2008 and 2011 during which time we had seven exhibitions under the banner of the Dowling St Project.
20a Dowling Street is a unique part of Dunedin’s visual arts history. The street itself is home to three art galleries and other artists’ studios, and up to a dozen artists have studios at 20a at any one time. Over the years it has been home to a large number of artists, some of whom have gone on to become well known in the New Zealand art scene. Some of the current and former members of the Dowling St Project are: Sam Foley, Charlotte Parallel, Liz Rowe, Anya Sinclair, Alan Ibell, Craig Freeborn, Jo Robertson, Ro Bradshaw, Isaac Leuchs, Anna Perry, Guy Howard-Smith, Sacha Lauchlan, Desi Liversage, Daniel Roberts, Sally Shepard, Jampa Stewart
